Knowledge of the sea bottom topography is essential for activities such as shipping, fishing, dredging, offshore construction and pipeline laying, amongst other things. Assessment of the sea bottom topography with present state-of-the-art techniques (ship-based-echosounders) may become relatively expensive a combination of the traditional methods with remote sensing (RS) techniques may greatly reduce survey costs.
Morphological Charts can be used for detection and monitoring of morphological features such as sand waves and channels, and for change detection. These charts provide unscaled depth variations and do not require calibration data. The main information content is in the location of distinct features, e.g. crests of sand waves or channel walls.
